Summer Specialty Series: July 22nd through August 9th from 5:45-8 on M, W, F.

The Summer Specialty Series is a group of courses for intermediate and advanced students assessed at a Jazz Level 5 or higher.  The Summer Specialty Series includes CFPAA and Guest Instructors and will offer seven specialty courses, from which students may choose in groups of two, four, or six. The course options are shown below.

Courses:

  1. Fosse: Course takes place on July 22, 24, and 26th: FOSSE: Learn about the techniques of Bob Fosse, the choreographer of musicals including Chicago, Pippin, Cabaret, and many other famous works.  Learn combos to explore different emotions and a challenging Dance Style that to the eye, appears simple, but in reality, is difficult to perfect due to its dance trademarks including turned-in knees, sideways shuffling, and rolled shoulders.

  2. Kick-Line: Course takes place on July 22, 24, and 26th: Kick-Line: Kickline or Kick for short, is a precision-based dance style made most famous by the Radio City Rockettes whose signature move is an eye-high leg kick performed in perfect unison in a chorus line. Many local high school teams have their own kick teams who employ this style of dance along with other precision movements. This is a great class to help prepare students for kickline auditions.

  3. Heels Class (Levels 8-10 only): Course takes place on July 29th, 31st, and August 2nd: Heels Class: CFPAA knows the importance of dancing in heels as it pertains to a career and that’s why we have included this too often overlooked skill as part of our specialty series. Professional female dancers will continuously wear some form of heels, whether it’s a ballroom shoe, a character heel or even a boot.  While students may not have to wear heels in a dance company, most TV, film, and Broadway dance contracts are going to require dancers to wear heels. *Students will need Character Heels. Look for our flyer about our insanely discounted character heels to arrive in your email inbox soon.

  4. Broadway Class (Levels 5-7 only): Course takes place on July 29th, 31st, and August 2nd: Broadway Dance Class: This course will cover some dance styles used in musical theatre, including jazz tap, and/or instructor choice. This course will be super-challenging for a student in levels 5-7, but oh so worth it in the end.

  5. Jazz Funk: Course takes place on July 29th, 31st, and August 2nd: Jazz Funk: Jazz Funk, also called Street Jazz, borrows significant movement from other dance styles. From ballet-modern-hip hop- to lyrical, jazz funk incorporates little bits and pieces of other dance genres and wraps into a funky style that is both fun and expressive! (from http://www.albanydancefitness.com

  6. That’s Just Jazz: Course takes place on August 5th, 7th, and 9th: That’s Just Jazz: No description needed. The title says it all. This course will focus on Isolations, Grounded movement, Syncopation, Contractions, as well as other skills specific to this uniquely American style of dance.

  7. Lyrical Hip Hop: Course takes place on August 5th, 7th, and 9th: Lyrical Hip Hop: lyrical hip-hop is sprinkled with contemporary-inspired steps that tell a story to the lyrics of a song, usually a slow one with a strong beat. According to Tony Testa, “What makes lyrical hip hop unique is that there must be a story. And these stories go beyond the emoting you might see dancers do during a contemporary routine. Lyrical hip-hop dancers take it to another level by actually playing characters.”
